I have a folder of Nikon raw files that I've extensively worked-up in ACR. Photo Mechanic can embed XMP data into raw files (unlike Adobe products) I'm not saying this is the issue, but I would check the preferences in PM and see if you have the save XMP to Raw files option selected.Įdit: its actually called "allow raw files to be modified in the IPTC/XMP tab of preferences. The ACR settings must be stored somewhere else, as they persist after all the xmp files are deleted. I don't use Bridge - but I could fire it up to clear the settings.īut I'm really trying to figure where the settings are kept - I'd always assumed that they were in the xmp files that fill up my folders, but now I'm thinking these xmp files are just those generated by Photo Mechanic when I give photos ratings. you may want to copy your other NEF RAW files to a different folder before clearing all the settings so you don't lose the settings you want to keep for yourself. That preference panel in Photo Mechanic always made my head hurt! I'll look into it. (Actually, it is the snapshots that I don't want to send to my client.) All settings are saved in the same XMP file. One of the edits can be the original raw. For every edit you take a new snapshot (the edit panel the looks like a stack of papers). Fingers crossed that this helps yet not so sure: Photo Mechanic Preferencesĭo you know that you can save several different edits of a RAW file in ACR. Photo Mechanic allows reading from both embedded IPTC and the XMP file and you can choose the order of which one is read first.Ī long shot because I don't know all the implications of the settings yet this link goes to a listing of all the options and I also included a cut and paste of a single section from that link. Is it possible if the person on the receiving end is using Photo Mechanic with similar settings that they an extract the settings from the IPTC even without the XMP sidecar file. Photo Mechanic seems extremely flexible on when to read IPTC vs Side car fiels and in the settings portion it indicates that you can allow the metadata to also be written as embedded in the file as IPTC (as well as in the raw file). I have one more to consider yet it may be a long shot especially since I don't use Photo Mechanic. Very good question and lots of good exploring of answers by forum members. (My hunch is that I'm doing something really stupid.) I'm still at a loss to explain how when I make a copy of a folder of worked-up nefs, delete all the xmp files, send the folder to my laptop, and then open the nefs in ACR - all the original image adjustments are still in place. The second app will then write its data into the same xmp file.

The first app to touch a nef will create the xmp file. I've established that, on my main computer, both Photo Mechanic and ACR are writing XMP files. It seems the OP is now most interested in where the edits are store.

Why not just clear the settings as suggested above? This should remove any adjustments you have made in ACR except for labels, stars etc. In Bridge, right-click on a file, click on Develop Settings and then on Clear Settings.
